Microsoft : little mistake with fatal followings ?

Preface

Due to the great interesting for this documentation we want to write here a small preface. Unfortunately some things got laid out in the scene a little bit other as we wanted it .

  • We think that the foil could be the reason for the overheating, because some overheated boxes had the foil on the warming guidance PAD and one box which still runs perfectly only had the warming guidance PAD without the foil.

  • This thing concerns only a few and not every XBOX360.

  • Therefore it could be a mistake by the production by a few boxes. That would explain the problem-free exchange by Microsoft. But that is only a speculation ( we still hope for a statement by Microsoft).

  • The support of Microsoft which concerns boxes which are out of order is great. Nobody who had a new unopened box had problems with it.

  • We hope that the XBOX360 will run in the future as 100% perfect as the old version (XBOX) and we are still convinced of the qualitatively abilities of Microsoft.

  • As soon as we are having a statement through Microsoft for this theme we will publish it of course at once here.

Like almost everybody knows we are activ in the scene of casemodding for consoles. Because of that we have just after appearing of the xbox360 divided it in singular parts to see, what could be able by casemodding. We got at once active and built for example a blue stand-by-lightning for the powerbutton. Besides we developed the multimedia connect.

For these works we had to open the box, but that proved as a very expensive mistake a little bit later. 2- 3 weeks after the modification the box got more and more losses and at the end it didn’t work any more.

Of course we wanted to know where to find the mistake and started our search. Unfortunately we didnt document the result at once because of the grind over Microsoft. Otherwise would be these news online since 4 weeks.

By different discussions with dealer colleagues we have talked about this problem again and again und now we found it by konsole24.de . The colleagues have documented the problem at once for us.

In the following documentation you can see exactly, that a simple mistake in the final assembly of the XBOX360 has seriously effects for the box and the call of Microsoft.

This probably mistake doesn’t exist by every XBOX360. Only a few boxes are concerned by this problem and we think that the overheated boxes are such.

At the end of this document you can find links where you can download the following pictures (highly dissolving) and likewise a small video which shows the problem.

In the following picture you can see the mainboard, where the radiator box of CPU and GPU were removed.

Neither Konsole24 still we could trust our eyes, as we examined the warming pads of the both Radiator boxes. In the following pictures you can see on the left the CPU Radiator box and on the right side the GPU Radiator box. You can exactly recognize the place by both of the radiator boxes which lying exactly on the respectively processor. Likewise exactly you can recognize, that after taking off the radiator boxes in the area of the thermal compound an exactly different exists.

To the explanation: thermal compound or thermal pads ( in this case pads) are used to create the heat transfer between processor and radiator box in the best possible way.

Once again clearly the difference. In the first picture you can see how a decreased radiator box should look. You only can recognize remainders of the thermal compound in the area of the processor core.

Contrastly herefore the area of the graphics processor core. Here you can exactly see, that there is could be a mistake, because the silver metallic looking foil should lay flat on the processor. The unevenness in the foil mean cavities which obstruct the heat dissipation.

In the picture above you can already see the radiator box with the thermal compound on it ( grey). Unfortunately there is still a silver layer on it. This layer is a foil which probably makes the supplier of the radiator boxes on the cooling pads. This foil should help that the thermal compound doesn’t get dirty before the assembly. This foil you should directly remove before you install the radiator box. as you can see on the next picture.

If you don’t remove this foil before installing the radiator box , the heat transfer between processor and radiator box is hardly limited and it could follow the defect of the processor. That can happen faster or slower.

The effect is always the same. The XBOX360 is defect and has to exchanged by Microsoft.

The following picture shows once again very exactly that the foil was still on the thermal compound and has caused at least by two boxes a total loss. These boxes were bought independently in Germany.

Unfortunately these boxes didn’t get exchanged by Microsoft because the warranty seal was broken.

Now our recommendation and surly the recommendation of each specialist of the world:

Neither you don’t open the xbox360 thus you don’t loose the warranty, or you remove and control at once after opening the both radiator boxes.

After that you have to clean the flat surfaces of the processor and the radiator box and attach a new thermal compound ( this you can get in almost every computershop).

Thus you can very surely prevent an overheating.
